Gum Treatment (Periodontics)

Gum disease is one of the two most common diseases that affect our oral cavity. This disease affects the gum and bone surrounding the teeth. The disease does not produce obvious signs and symptoms until it has progressed to an advanced stage. In all stages of gum disease, patients usually suffer from bleeding gums as a result of bacteria causing damage to the gums.

Gum specialists (Periodontists) are specially trained dentists who detect and treat the complete range of gum diseases.

What is Gum Disease?

In order to understand gum disease, we need to first understand the structures surrounding the tooth. The tooth is divided into the crown and the root. The root is surrounded by bone, which in turn is covered by gums. There is a space between the tooth and gums, called a pocket, which is present both in healthy and diseased states.

Gum disease originates from bacteria that gain entry into the pocket. When bacteria enter, they attack the gums. This causes injury to the gums, resulting in spontaneous bleeding upon touch, pain, redness, and sometimes swelling.

If bacteria hardens to form tartar, it can spread deeper towards the bone and cause the destruction of the bone and as well as the deepening of the periodontal pocket.

In the advanced stage of gum disease (periodontitis), the tooth would have so much bone lost that it becomes shaky and may drift out of position. During the later stages of gum disease, the tooth can no longer be kept and has to be extracted.

The accumulated bacteria in the infected gums can enter our blood stream to be transported to the various organs; such as the heart, kidneys, and womb; in the body. The maintenance of good oral health is paramount in controlling a series of health problems that will occur with gum disease, but having said that, it becomes a vicious cycle as it is also established by the World Health Organisation (WHO) that patients afflicted with conditions such as diabetes are prone to the worsening of gum disease.

  1. Saving of teeth

The inevitable outcome of uncontrolled gum disease is tooth loss. Many of these teeth loss are not decayed nor fractured. They are either extracted because they are too loose and cause pain when eating or they can even drop out on their own. Gum treatment will save many of these teeth.

  2. Curing of bleeding gums

Bleeding from the gums is one of the first few signs of gum disease. Many patients can experience bleeding upon brushing or eating. In severe cases, bleeding can occur spontaneously.

  3. Elimination of bad breath

Due to the build-up of food and bacteria under the gums, patients with gum disease often complain of bad breath. Sometimes, people surrounding the patients can detect the smell emitting from the patient’s mouth as well. Successful treatment of gum disease can eliminate the problem of bad breath.

  4. Better health through better gums

Untreated gum disease can cause bacteria to enter our blood stream and affect our health. Research have shown that patients with gum disease have an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, pre-term birth etc. Hence it is important to have gum disease treated.

  1. What you expect at their first consultation?

Relevant x-rays will be taken and comprehensive examination are done by our qualified specialists.

Our specialists will then discuss your pre-existing dental condition and treatment required to save your natural teeth.

Discussion of treatment plan includes counselling on the duration of treatment, phases of treatment, cost and as well as maintenance protocol.

  2. Initial gum treatment (Phase I)

Periodontists will perform the initial gum treatment using ultrasonic scalers and fine instruments.

Instructions and technique for maintenance of good oral hygiene is given.

Local anaesthesia may be used to ensure that the treatment is pain-free.

  3. Definitive gum treatment (Phase II)

The periodontist will perform definitive gum treatment in phase II.

The periodontist will perform specialized treatment that will grow and regenerate the bone and gum around teeth.

With the new bone and gum tissue being regenerated, the tooth will be better anchored to the gum after having gained more strength from bone support.

  4. Follow-up care

After gum disease has been successfully treated, the periodontist will perform follow-up care to ensure that gum disease will not reoccur.

Professional cleaning and careful monitoring will be done during follow-up care.

  5. Is the gum treatment painful?

Gum treatment is generally pain-free. Most of our patients do not require painkillers after treatment.
